Tienda receives honorary doctorate

Marta Tienda, director of Princeton's Office of Population Research , received an honorary doctorate in social science from Ohio State University at its Commencement ceremony June 14. Tienda's research focuses on diversity in higher education, race and gender inequality, and the sociology of economic life.

Tienda, a sociologist who is the Maurice P. During '22 Professor of Demographic Studies, has written scores of scholarly papers, book chapters and articles, and is co-author of "The Color of Opportunity: Pathways to Family, Work and Welfare in the Inner City" and "The Hispanic Population of the United States." She also is co-editor of "Youth in Cities: A Cross-National Perspective," "Divided Opportunities: Poverty, Minorities and Social Policy" and "Hispanics in the U.S. Economy," among other works.

Tienda was one of four honorary degree recipients, including President George W. Bush, Yankees principal owner George M. Steinbrenner III, and Walter E. Massey, president of Atlanta's Morehouse College.
