Smoke condition cleared in Fine Hall, Feb. 16

Operations at Fine Hall have resumed, and there were no injuries related to a report of smoke in the building at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Fire personnel responded to Fine Hall shortly after 5 p.m. after a smoke alarm went off because of a smoke condition inside a hot water heater pump room on the building's seventh floor. Occupants were evacuated for approximately an hour to allow fire officials to clear smoke from the building. No damage was caused to the pump room or to the building.

Occupants were allowed back inside the building shortly after 6 p.m. Personnel from the Princeton Township Fire Department, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Fire Department and the University Department of Public Safety responded to the scene.

It appears the cause of the smoke condition was a water pump that became overheated due to an electrical malfunction. Fine Hall is an academic building located on Washington Road.

Cause of fire under investigation .

The cause of a major fire at the College Road apartments on Princeton's campus on Thursday, Jan. 10, is under investigation by the Princeton Fire Department. There were no injuries. 

Health concerns prompt smoking ban in undergrad dorms .

Concerned about the effects of second-hand smoke and following peer institutions, Vice President for Campus Life Janet S. Dickerson announced that she has accepted student recommendations to prohibit smoking in undergraduate dormitories.

University volunteer firefighters help campus and community .

The Princeton Fire Department Associate Member Program allows Princeton University employees to volunteer with the Princeton Fire Department during their work shifts, augmenting the municipality's volunteer ranks during critical daytime hours. The partnership has greatly benefited the Princeton campus and greater community during the past three-plus years.

University employees join fire department in pilot program .

On the morning of Oct. 7, the Princeton Fire Department sent out a call -- firefighters were needed to respond to an alarm at 1 Monument Drive. Four University employees -- Bob Allen, Michael Christensen, Michael Kervan and Chris Machusak -- rushed to a University building on Alexander Road to pull on their fire jackets, fire pants, boots and helmets.
