Research Interests

  • History of the medieval eastern Roman (Byzantine) empire, in particular c. 6th – 11th c. CE
  • The causal relationship between change in respect of politics, social structure and the use and allocation of resources, on the one hand, and shifts in environmental and climatic conditions on the other
  • State systems and structures across the European and Islamic worlds from late ancient to early modern times
  • The production, distribution and consumption of resources in the late ancient and medieval world, especially in the context of warfare
