Cebic: the Center for Environmental Bioionorganic Chemistry Nitrogenase metal site

The combination of molecular and large-scale environmental sciences of the type pursued by Center for Environmental Bioinorganic Chemistry, CEBIC, provides a particularly good vehicle for explaining science, its motives, and its methods to non-scientists. On the one hand, it shows that global environmental issues, which often appear vague and uncertain, have precise underlying mechanisms; on the other hand, the global issues, which are of immediate human concern, provide a context and a raison d'être for the molecular science. This web site, which explains CEBIC science in a way that can be understood by non-scientists, is an important part of our outreach effort.

Investigators from CEBIC play a significant role in the education outreach program. Our efforts include: professional development with school administrators and teachers working on school science reform in the region; laboratory experiences for community college and high school students; classroom demonstrations; public lectures; and undergraduate summer fellowships. Our goal is to engage faculty, postdoctoral fellows and University students in a program that offers environmental science content and inquiry-based applications for teachers, students and the community.

Other University partners in CEBIC also have active outreach programs. CEBIC investigators from the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California Santa Cruz have been involved in the Northern California Regional Ocean Sciences Bowl. This regional event is one of 18 nationwide and is part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl.
