Community Service Opportunities

This year, OWL is introducing a number of community service opportunities. We will be visiting Womanspace, a battered women’s shelter in West Trenton, as well as mentoring girls at John Witherspoon Middle School through Girls’ Empowerment. We are also offering opportunities to join two SVC projects—Campus Girl Scouts and HomeFront Mentoring—in their volunteer missions.

1. Womanspace

Womanspace is a battered women’s shelter located in West Trenton. In December, Womanspace will light 50,000 luminaries along Nassau Street for its annual Communities of Light project.

OWL will be volunteering at the shelter to repackage luminary kits left from last year next Friday, October 14 from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. (We will meet to drive to the shelter at 12:15 p.m. and return to campus by 4 p.m.) If interested, contact Jessica Gross at jrgross@.

2. Girls’ Empowerment

Through Girls’ Empowerment, OWL members can mentor girls at John Witherspoon Middle School on Witherspoon Street. Stay tuned for updates on visits to the middle school.

3. Campus Girl Scouts

A project of the Student Volunteers Council, Campus Girl Scouts allows Princeton students to tutor Princeton High School students. The timing of tutoring sessions is dependent on volunteers’ schedules. If interested, contact Alana Arnold at aarnold@.

Campus Girl Scouts also offers an After School Program at Princeton Housing Village for 12 girls in 3rd through 7th grade. The program runs on Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. In addition, the After School Program at the Clay Center for Learning runs on Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. If interested in either after school program, contact Sonia Esparza at sesparza@.

4. HomeFront Mentoring

HomeFront, a non-profit that works to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness, serves thousands of Mercer County families with case management, food, housing facilities, and programs for homeless kids. The Student Volunteers Council’s HomeFront Mentoring Project is a weekly project in which volunteers work to help kids at the Family Preservation Center in Ewing escape the realities of homelessness. If interested, contact Caroline Lau at cslau@.
