  • To request funding support from the Center for African American Studies, please download and submit a "Request for Funding" document.  Requests are reviewed on a monthly basis by the Program Committee.  Please request funds at least 60 days before approval is needed.

Senior Thesis Research Funding

The Center for African American Studies (CAAS) is now accepting applications for Senior Thesis Research Funding for the 2009-2010 academic year. In order to receive full consideration, a hard copy of the application materials must be delivered to Professor Noliwe Rooks at the Center for African American Studies, 105 Stanhope Hall no later than December 4, 2009 at 5:00 pm. CAAS Dissertation Research Grants

The Center for African American Studies is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for the CAAS Dissertation Research Grants. Graduate Students in all disciplines are eligible to apply for awards of up to $1,500 for the 2009-2010 academic year. These funds are to support research in the area of race broadly defined and relevant to African American Studies.

In order to apply, please e-mail a 1-2 page project description, along with a budget to Noliwe Rooks (nrooks@princeton.edu) no later than December 4, 2009. Research funds may be used to fund travel for research, to present at a conference, and/or to purchase books and supplies. Though you will receive the grant in the form of a check, you must provide receipts to verify the expenditures associated with the grant no later than June 15, 2010. If you have an outstanding balance from previous years you are not eligible to apply.


Ruth J. Simmons Thesis Prize

We are happy to announce the competition for the 2009 Ruth Simmons Thesis Prize. This $1,000 prize is awarded to the concentrator whose thesis best exhibits excellence in research and writing within the field of African American Studies.

If you would like to have your thesis considered for the prize, the Center must receive it by Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Submissions must be delivered to Stanhope Hall no later than 4:00 pm. We do not necessarily need a bound copy. Concentrators who wish to self-nominate should submit a written letter of support from their advisor. Letters may be e-mailed to nrooks@princeton.edu.

We will announce a winner by May 22, 2009 and award the prize on Class Day, June 1, 2009, 1:00 pm, Stanhope Hall.
