"desveladas: a fotonovela" is a collaborative graphic novel by the fiction writer Nelly Rosario, poet Sheila Maldonado, and multimedia journalist Macarena Hernández. Together they remix the fotonovela as comic reportage, poetry, memoir, and graphic novel.
Today sees a popular resurgence of comics and the graphic narrative as an innovative way of telling stories. Fotonovelas date back to post World War II Italy, where they were used to promote films. The popularity of these ‘photo-booklets’ made them a genre in their own right. In the US, the genre has influenced comic-book artists like The Hernández Brothers.
In "desveladas: a fotonovela," the authors use primary materials--video stills, photographs, documents, and original text-- to tell various stories about life on the perimeters of ordinary.
