Faculty-Graduate Seminar "African American Identity, History and the State"
Wednesday afternoons, 4:30-6:00pm. Stanhope Seminar Room
The theme for 2007-2008 is African American Identity, History and the State. Drawing on research from diverse fields of study, this year’s seminar explores the intersection of black self-definitions, cultural productions, resistance and accommodation with the policies and practices of the American state. The seminar is interested in exploring how these intersections have changed across time and in mapping their contemporary formations. The research presented in the workshop will assist participants in drawing connections across multiple areas of racialized state/citizen interaction, including: local economies, criminal justice, social policy, international conflict, religious practice and artistic expression.

The Faculty-Graduate seminar is an intimate intellectual community. Our goal is to establish a small but intellectually diverse and committed group of scholars who will attend all meetings and engage in sustained discourse during the year. Given these goals and the limited meeting space, we are accepting only ten (10) graduate students into each semester’s seminar. We encourage graduate students to commit to both semesters and preference for spring registration will be given to students engaged in the fall seminar. To register for the fall seminar please return the registration form to Carla Hailey Penn at chailey@princeton.edu. You will be informed by September 10th of acceptance into the seminar.
Sponsored by the Center for African American Studies.
