Mandelbrot fractals produce stunning, infinitely detailed patterns, and this image is just one example of the vast possibilities. This project began as a programming assignment for a computer science class. I later extended my solution to generate more interesting, larger images. At each point in a specified region, the program returns a value based on the number of iterations needed to determine whether or not that point is in the Mandelbrot set. Each value in the region is then assigned a color, creating the image you see here. The art in this process lies in finding visually interesting regions in fractal space and creating color assignment sets that make them come alive. For this competition, I rerendered the image at high resolution and expanded the color set to show greater detail.
