Yoga for Dancers
Master Class with Hilary Cartwright
The Lewis Center's Program in Dance will present a Master Class on "Yoga for Dancers" led by former Royal Ballet soloist Hilary Cartwright on Wednesday, February 26. The class will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Patricia and Ward Hagan '48 Dance Studio at 185 Nassau Street and is open to all Princeton students to participate.
In 1984 Hilary Cartwright co-founded the White Cloud Studio in New York City with Juliu Horvath and there developed "Yoga for Dancers." Cartwright was formerly a soloist with the Royal Ballet England and subsequently their Ballet Mistress. She also held the position of Associate Director of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Director of the Netherlands Dans Theatre II. Currently, she works closely with American Ballet Theatre's JKO School. Cartwright is also an international guest teacher in ballet and yoga.
"Yoga for Dancers" is based on the Juliu Horvath System applying yoga principles but differs from a traditional Hatha Yoga class because positions are not held but repeated in a fluid undulation. Through imagery the class allows an individual to gently unravel knots both mental and physical. The class provides a way to achieve flexibility in the body yet maintain the control to pass smoothly from one shape to another. It allows the mind to relax while rhythm and breath take over. At the same time it addresses elements of technique that apply directly to ballet placement, line and control.
The master class is open-level. Free and no pre-registration necessary. Please bring your own yoga mat.
