Adam Barruch

Guest Choreographer

Adam Barruch began his career as a young actor, performing professionally on Broadway and in film and television--working with prominent figures such as Tony Bennett, Jerry Herman and Susan Stroman. He later received dance training at LaGuardia High School for Music & Art and Performing Arts. After three years, he graduated early and was accepted into the dance department at The Juilliard School.

As a dancer he has performed the works of Jiri Kylian, Ohad Naharin, Susan Marshall, Jose Limon, Danièle Dèsnoyers and Sylvain Émard. As a choreographer, Adam's work has been presented at Dance Theater Workshop, City Center, The Juilliard School, Cunningham Studio, Ailey-Citigroup Theater, SUNY Purchase, New York University, Cedar Lake Theater and Theatre Usine C in Montreal. In March 2009, he self-produced a full evening of original dance/theater works at The Baryshnikov Arts Center, with his company Adam Barruch Dance.

He has presented work in the 2008 and 2009 Reverb Dance Festivals, 2009 Bushwick SITE Festival and the 2010 Dancer's Responding to Aids benefit: Dance From the Heart Men.  Adam was selected as an Emerging Collaborator for Springboard Danse in Montreal in 2009. Adam was also selected as a Movement and Dance Artist-in-Residence at the Stella Adler Acting Studio, where he collaborated with solo-performance artist Lauren Marie Albert. 

Adam has created new works for the Ailey/Fordham BFA Senior Concert and NYU Tisch School of the Arts MFA program. He was also selected to take part in a in a week-long choreographic residency at SUNY Purchase to create a work for this past fall's Reverb Festival 2010 taking place at the Ailey-Citigroup Theater. Adam has taught repertory and creative process to the dancers in the Movement Invention Project in NYC and for New Jersey Dance Theater Ensemble.

Most recently, Adam created a solo work on modern dance icon Margie Gillis--which premiered at Dance Theater Workshop, alongside his company in a shared evening with other emerging New York choreographers. He also presented a new solo work in the 2011 DanceRaw Festival.

This summer Adam Barruch Dance performed on the Inside/Out stage at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, and at the Chicago Dancing Festival.

Adam Barruch was selected as a participant in the 2011 Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation New Directions Choreography Lab made possible by generous support from the Ford Foundation.
