Jane Cox

Lecturer in Theater in the Lewis Center for the Arts

Jane is a lighting designer based in Brooklyn, NY, working primarily in theater, dance and opera. Jane’s New York theater credits include designs on Broadway, and for the Roundabout, Manhattan Theater Club, Playwrights Horizons, Second Stage, Public Theater, BAM and Signature Theater among many others. Frequent collaborators include directors John Doyle, Sam Gold and Davis McCallum.

Jane has designed regularly at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Guthrie, the McCarter; and has also designed for A.C.T., Yale Rep, Arena Stage, Steppenwolf, Center Stage and many others. Outside of America, Jane has working relationships with theater companies in London and in Dublin, where she grew up.

Opera work includes designs for Sydney Opera, Houston Grand, New York City Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Minnesota Opera and Juilliard Opera. Jane has long term collaborations with choreographers Monica Bill Barnes and Doug Varone.

Jane has taught courses at NYU (Tisch School of the Arts, graduate program in theater design); Vassar (drama department); Sarah Lawrence (dance department); UMass Amherst; and workshops at universities all over the country and at the Kennedy Center. She is represented in the book "Curtain Call: Celebrating a Century of Women Designing for Live Performance."

Projects in the 2012-13 theater season included Picnic on Broadway; Lucia di Lammermoor at Sydney Opera House; Passion at Classic Stage Company (Drama Desk nomination); The Flick (Lortel nomination) and The Whale at Playwrights Horizons; Color Purple in London, and Luster with the Monica Bill Barnes Dance Company. Jane has been teaching design at Princeton since 2007.
