If you have been to the student class exhibitions at the Lucas Gallery you will likely have seen the torn paper collages and masterwork transcriptions that are a hallmark of Brian Jermusyk’s Introductory Painting class at 185 Nassau. Brian adheres to Willem de Kooning’s notion that the art of the past is like a "big stew" that we dip into to feed and learn from. A Lecturer in Visual Arts who has taught painting and drawing since 1999, Brian has also taught at The Pratt Institute, The Minneapolis College of Art and Design, The New York Academy Graduate School of Figurative Art and Stonybrook University among others. He is a figurative artist whose work explores the perils of bodily existence, on themes from the diaries of Kenneth Tynan, the “Love of the Gods” or, currently, Japanese erotic prints. His work, most recently exhibited in The Means Justified: An Exhibition of Drawings at Central Connecticut State University, is often seen at the Temporary Museum of Painting in Brooklyn, and can be seen online at the Drawing Center Online Viewing Program.
