Lewis Center for the Arts Summer Funding Awards

The deadline for summer 2014 has passed. Applications for summer 2015 funding will be accepted next spring.

Each year, the Lewis Center for the Arts provides students the opportunity to spend the summer pursuing a project in the creative and performing arts. Students* may submit applications for course, travel and research costs related to their studies. Award winners and amounts are determined by a committee of Lewis Center faculty members.

Summer Research Funding Awards are made possible by:

*Funding is only open to Freshman, Sophomore or Junior students.


Mandatory Travel Requirement

Students must check the University’s Travel website before applying to see what countries are on the U.S. State Department Travel Warning List. The University and the Lewis Center will not fund undergraduate travel to countries on the U.S. State Department Travel Warning List. If funds are granted for travel, students must register their trip in CONCUR* as a requirement to receive those summer research funds.

*Information on how to register the trip via CONCUR will be issued only to those students who are notified that they have been awarded funding

Application Requirements

Written Proposal:

Please describe why you are requesting funding from the Lewis Center. Your 1,000 word maximum proposal must include:

  • Statement about how your academic studies are related to this endeavor
  • A financial budget and description of how you will use the funding
  • Indicate if you have requested or received funding for this proposal from any other department
  • Description of the original work that will evolve from your use of the funding
  • Statement about how your academic studies are related to this endeavor

Supporting Document Requirements:

  • Creative Writing—Please submit a writing sample of no more than ten (10) pages of your best poetry, prose fiction (double-spaced), translation OR screenwriting.
  • Dance/Theater—Supporting materials to be furnished if needed, upon request from the committee.
  • Visual Arts—Please attach a PDF containing images of recent work with captions or provide links to 5 minutes of video or performance work uploaded to Vimeo or YouTube.
    **Please Note: Any equipment purchased in relation to a project will remain property of the University.
