Despite tremendous observational efforts, it is still unclear which processes drive the star-formation histories of galaxies. Detailed studies of nearby galaxies offer many clues, but reconstructing star formation histories is complicated due to the unknown merger histories. Direct look-back studies allow better prospects. Both the star-forming and the quiescent galaxy populations provide different constraints on the star-formation histories and its dependence on other fundamental parameters. I will discuss our current understanding of this topic and the challenges encountered in addressing this issue.
