Assistant Professor

Lyman Spitzer, Jr. Postdoctoral Fellowship

 
The Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University, invites applications for the Lyman Spitzer, Jr. Postdoctoral Fellowship in Astrophysics.  The Spitzer Fellow is expected to carry out original research in astrophysics, independently or in collaboration with Princeton faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and students.  This opportunity is intended primarily to provide support for researchers in theoretical astrophysics, but exceptional candidates in all areas of astronomy are encouraged to apply.  The fellowship includes a substantial annual research fund.

Carnegie-Princeton Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Observatories at the Carnegie Institution for Science and the Department of Astrophysical Sciences of Princeton University invite applications for a four-year postdoctoral fellowship in astronomy, to begin in September 2016.  The Fellow is expected to work two years at the main offices of the Observatories in Pasadena and two years at Princeton, in an order to be negotiated with the applicant.  The Carnegie-Princeton Fellow is expected to carry out original research in any area of astronomy or astrophysics, either independently or in collaboration with staff, faculty or students at the host institutions.  The principal selection criteria will be outstanding research accomplishments and promise of future achievement, although preference will be given to researchers working in those areas in which Carnegie and Princeton have active research interests.

The Fellow will have access to all of the resources and facilities of both institutions.  In particular, Carnegie operates the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, which includes the twin 6.5-meter Magellan telescopes, the 2.5-meter Dupont and 1.0-meter Swope telescopes, and provides an excellent environment for observational astrophysics and cosmology.  The Fellow will also have access to Carnegie's newly installed compute cluster consisting of 1472 cores.
 
The Department of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton is a major partner in the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, and is collaborating with the Japanese astronomical community on large imaging and spectroscopic surveys with the Subaru Telescope, focused on extragalactic astronomy and planetary systems around other stars.  Together with research groups in other departments in the university and the nearby Institute for Advanced Study, the department offers an unparalleled environment for research in theoretical and observational astrophysics and cosmology.  The fellowship provides support for observing, travel, computing and publications, and the observing facilities will be accessible for the entire duration of the fellowship.

Plasma Astrophysics / MPPC

The Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University, invites applications for one or more postdoctoral research associate positions as part of the Max Planck Princeton Center (MPPC), an international center in plasma astrophysics established in collaboration with the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and several institutes of the Max-Planck Society in Germany (including the MPA and the IPP).  Successful applicants will be located on campus in the Department of Astrophysical Sciences, and will work in collaboration with faculty, postdocs, and research staff at institutions within the MPPC on fundamental problems in astrophysical plasma dynamics.  In particular, the core research topics of the MPPC include magnetic reconnection, energetic particle acceleration and propagation, properties of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, dynamos and magnetic field amplification in stars and accretion disks.  Astrophysics application areas for this position include kinetic effects in solar-wind and accretion-disk turbulence and cosmic ray/ISM interactions.

Plasma Theory and Simulation

The Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University, invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in astrophysical plasma theory and simulation.  The successful candidate will work with Prof. Anatoly Spitkovsky on applications of particle-in-cell plasma simulation methods to astrophysical problems, including the physics of collisionless shocks, cosmic rays, pulsar magnetospheres, and modeling and design of laboratory astrophysics experiments.  A strong background in high-energy astrophysics, plasma physics, computational science and parallel computing is preferred.  The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art computational facilities, opportunities for collaboration and support for travel.  Appointments are for one year, renewable annually based on satisfactory performance and subject to funding, for a total of up to three years.  The expected starting date is September 1, 2016 or earlier.

Postdoctoral Positions in Software

The Department of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University has several open positions within the Astronomical Data Group, led by Robert Lupton, Michael Strauss and Jim Gunn.  The successful applicants will work on a variety of projects in the general area of software development and support for the acquisition, reduction, analysis and testing of photometric and spectroscopic data from very large surveys as part of a group including Drs.Robert Lupton, Michael Strauss, Jim Gunn, Jenny Greene and David Spergel.  The expected starting date is September 1, 2016, though earlier starts can be accommodated.

The group is heavily involved in the scientific, management and technical aspects of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) project, which is building a dedicated 8.4-meter telescope to carry out a 20,000 square degree multi-band and multi-epoch imaging survey.  Princeton is responsible for the deep imaging ("data release production") portion of the LSST software.  In addition, the Department is collaborating with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan to carry out deep, high-resolution, wide-area imaging surveys to study galaxy evolution and weak lensing with Hyper Suprime-Cam, a large-format camera on the Subaru 8.2 meter telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii.  We are also part of a consortium building a wide-field multi-object (2390 fiber) spectrograph to be placed at the Subaru Prime Focus and expect to play a role in WFIRST, the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope.  Finally, we are using the Advanced Atacama Cosmology Telescope to map the intensity and polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background at a variety of frequencies (ACTPol).
 
Software development and support for these projects will include work on algorithm development (e.g. the determination of Point Spread Functions; optimal processing of multi-epoch, multi-band data; and spectrophotometry with fiber spectrographs); design and implementation of application class libraries; and software engineering (examining the performance and scientific reliability of algorithms, as well as unit and regression testing of complex software systems).
 
We aim to recruit from as broad a pool of talent as possible, and endeavor to preserve the Astrophysical Sciences Department's reputation as a pleasant workplace with a lively and friendly scientific atmosphere which recognizes that technical innovations are an important intellectual contribution to the science being produced by these surveys.
 
We seek candidates with a PhD or other advanced degree and expertise in scientific computing. Applicants should have knowledge of optical or radio astronomy at faint levels, CCD or radio data, handling of large data sets, efficient automated data reduction, and/or image and spectroscopic analysis. Responsibilities include algorithm development and debugging; evaluating the scientific performance of pipeline code on real data; writing robust, efficient code (primarily on Unix platforms in Python/C++); and running and maintaining pipeline code. Experience in C/C++, Python, software engineering practices, and astronomical instrumentation is desirable.  The appointment(s) will be made to the research or specialist staff at a level and salary commensurate with experience, for an initial period of one year which can be renewed for one or more years depending on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.  The LSST positions are funded for the duration of construction (i.e. until 2022) and potentially beyond, and all positions may be extended indefinitely for the appropriate individuals.

Extragalactic Observational Astronomy

The Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University, invites applications to fill a postdoctoral research position in extragalactic observational astronomy, working with Jenny Greene.  The applicant will collaborate on one of the following: (1) an ambitious integral-field survey of nearby massive galaxies, with the goal of studying their central black holes, stellar populations, and dark matter halos (2) MaNGA-based surveys of active galaxies or brightest cluster galaxies or (3) integral-field observations of megamaser disk galaxies.

Postdoctoral Position in Theoretical Plasma Physics

An opening is available in the Department of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University for a postdoctoral researcher in theoretical plasma physics.  The researcher will participate in studies of the interaction of intense electromagnetic energy with plasma, at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.  The successful applicant will have a PhD in theoretical plasma physics or a related field, including computational plasma physics.  A strong background in fluid dynamics or in plasma interactions in extreme regimes of plasma density, including solid-state plasma, will be valuable.  The expected starting date may be October 1, 2014, and is negotiable. Initial term of appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance and funding.

Postdoctoral Research Associate - High Energy Density Plasmas

The Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in high energy density plasmas and plasma astrophysics. The successful candidate will perform experimental studies of magnetic reconnection, collisionless shocks, and particle energization, as well as associated numerical simulations for the design and interpretation of the experiments. FAQ

I started my application initially, but don’t remember my User Name and/or Password to get back in. How do I retrieve my User Name and Password so I can get back in to complete my application?

I clicked on View Faculty & Academic Application; Some of my information is there, but it is missing my references and attachments. Also, at the bottom of the page is an Agreement where I am asked to sign, certifying that my information is true as entered. Do I need to sign this and send it in?

Please ignore this page. It does not show your entire application, only some parts of it. You may view your references and attachments separately. You do not need to physically sign this and send it anywhere. The submission of your application will count as an electronic signature.

 

For the attachments, does the 5MB maximum file size refer to the sum of the documents or each individual document?

Each individual document can be no more than 5 MB.

 

The attachment page indicates that you want separate CV and publications documents. Is it really necessary for them to be separate?

I’m not ready to upload all of my application materials. Can I send them later?

Yes, you may save and come back to your application later to attach any or all of the documents.

I’ve already asked my references to provide letters of recommendation on my behalf, and they’ve indicated that they will send the letters to Princeton. Do I also need to provide the information here?

Yes, this is a critical step in your application. By indicating your references and their e-mail addresses here, we will contact them and give them instructions on how to upload your letters so that they are part of your application. Letters e-mailed or mailed separately may not become part of your application.

 

How can I find out whether or not my recommendation letters were received?

You may log into the system anytime after you’ve initially applied. Under References Received, click on View Status.

 

I’ve changed my mind as to which jobs I’m interested in and/or who my letter writers should be. How do I change those?

Can I withdraw my application?

Yes, when you log back in to your application, click on “Withdraw Application” under Status.

 

I entered my personal information, answered the questions and indicated my references. I didn’t yet upload my documents, as I wanted to come back and do that later, but I received the following message:

This is confusing, because my application is not complete. What do I do?

Click the OK button. This means that everything you entered has been received. You are still able to go back into your application to add or modify your attachments. 

 

I am applying for an external fellowship (Hubble, Einstein, Sagan, Jansky, NSF, etc) that I wish to bring to Princeton. How should I proceed?
 
 
First, we encourage you also to apply through the normal channels, as described above; the competition for those fellowships is fierce. Second, most of these fellowships require identifying a faculty sponsor or mentor at your host institution. Please write to whomever on our faculty would be most appropriate for this, or send e-mail to postapp16@astro.princeton.edu if you are not sure whom to approach. Even if you need not identify a mentor, we would appreciate knowing if you are planning to list Princeton as your first-choice institution in your fellowship application; do send a note to this effect to postapp16@astro.princeton.edu.
