Reserved Digital Media

Q: How can I get assistance with reserved digital media?

A: Digital Media in Blackboard are just links to specific servers and are not actually stored on the Blackboard servers. If you have problems, you should contact:

Audio Reserves: Mendel Music Library 609.258.4251 (pmatthew@princeton.edu)

E-Reserves: Electronic Course Reserve Service 609.258.3224 (ereserve@princeton.edu)

Images and Slides: Almagest 609.258.6903 (almagest@princeton.edu)

Videos: Language Resource Center 609.258.2114 (lrcweb@princeton.edu)

Q: How can I link to Almagest Projects, Audio Reserves, Digital Videos, and/or E-Reserves, so that my students can access the materials from my Blackboard course site?

A: Audio Reserves: If you want to make audio files assigned in your music class accessible to your students through your Backboard site, please contact Paula Matthews of the Mendel Music Library at 609.258.4251 or e-mail pmatthew@Princeton.EDU. The links will be created for you and access will be restricted to your students (see E-Reserves). Learn more about Online Audio Reserves Project.

E-Reserves: If your course is participating in the library's Electronic Course Reserve Service (E-Reserves), we will automatically place a link to your E-Reserves in your course menu. Because of copyright restrictions, access to E-Reserves must be limited to students enrolled in the course, therefore we will make this part of the course web site unavailable to guests. If you are placing other copyright-protected materials in your course site, we urge you to place them in an area that is not available to guests -- see instructions below.

Images: ETC's Almagest database is a media manager for storing and organizing a wide variety of digital media, such as images, video segments, animations, sound, and text files. Material is entered, edited, and displayed online using a web browser. It can be used to deliver slide and media presentations in any classroom equipped with an internet connection and a digital projector. Almagest materials are also available for study and review by students. Contact 609.258.6903 (almagest@princeton.edu ) for more information on setting up an Almagest project. To integrate your Almagest project with your Blackboard site, see instructions below.

Videos: If you want to make films assigned in your class accessible to your students on the Video -on- Demand server through your Backboard site, please contact Marianne Crusius of the Language Resource Center 609.258.2114 or e-mail crusius@Princeton.EDU. The links will be created for you and access will be restricted to your students (see E-Reserves).

ALMAGEST-BLACKBOARD INTEGRATION

From your course or organization control panel, select any content area (such as "Course Materials "). From the dropdown box at top right, select Almagest Lecture, then click Go. (If you want files to be accessible from a particular folder within that content area, first click on the name of that folder.)

The Add Almagest Lecture page that is called up will show you the lectures associated with your course. Either click on a specific lecture from the dropdown box, or turn on the radio button next to All Lectures if you prefer to place just one link for Almagest in your course site.

Type any description or instructions for the students in the text box, select visibility dates, and Submit.

Making part or all of a Blackboard web site unavailable to guests

This feature was developed for parents of the K-12 cohort.)

To make your entire site unavailable to guests, from the Course Options / Organization Options area of the Control Panel window, click on Settings, then Guest Access, then turn on the "No" radio button next to "Allow Guests" and click Submit.

RefWorks (Bibliographic Management Software)

Q: I use RefWorks. How can I link this resource to my Blackboard course?

A: In your course tools area, there is a link to RefWorks. Here are the user instructions:This open source RefWorks Bridge Extension for Blackboard (a "Building Block" in Blackboard parlance) developed jointly by RefWorks and Northwestern University provides one-click access to RefWorks databases.

Overview

Access to RefWorks is provided in two ways:

  • Blackboard users can access their personal RefWorks accounts from within the course Tools page;
  • Instructors can set up links to specific RefWorks databases from within courses, allowing students to access course-specific reading lists and group research projects.

Getting Started: Instructions for Users

The Blackboard extension will allow you direct access to your RefWorks account by clicking on the RefWorks link in the Tools area of your course.

The first time you click on the Tools link, you will be asked if you wish to create a new RefWorks account or if you wish to link to an existing RefWorks account:

Creating a New RefWorks Account

If you choose to create a new RefWorks account, the Blackboard extension will open a new browser window and automatically create a new RefWorks account.  The next time you click on the RefWorks link from within Blackboard, you will be taken directly to your RefWorks account.

Connecting to an Existing RefWorks Account

If you want to connect to an existing RefWorks account, you will be asked to enter your RefWorks login name and Password for your existing account.  If the login and password are entered correctly, the Blackboard extension will change the login name for that account to "BB-[ Blackboard username]" and open a new browser window which bring you into your existing RefWorks account . The next time you click on the RefWorks link within Blackboard, you will be taken directly to your RefWorks account.

Regardless of whether you created a new account or linked to an existing account, RefWorks will send you an acknowledging email.  The email (depending on how it is customized by the RefWorks Administrator at the particular institution) will contain the RefWorks account login information, including the new username, the password, and the RefWorks Group Code.  You will need to this information if you want to access your RefWorks account outside Blackboard, so save this e-mail.

Getting Started - Instructions for Instructors

RefWorks accounts can be used to publish Instructor reading lists or to foster group collaboration on projects .

Instructors can provide links to existing RefWorks accounts in any of the course Content areas ( Course Information, Course Documents, Assignments, External Links, etc.) .  Each content area can link to an entirely different RefWorks account.

1. The instructor first creates a RefWorks account(s) at www.refworks.com/refworks .  Verify that you have reached your Institution's RefWorks login page and click on the link that says "Sign up for an Individual Account".  Each account you create will need a unique login name and password (and read-only password if desired).

2.  In Blackboard, the instructor determines access to the account by entering the appropriate type of password, as the following paragraphs explain in detail .  Students can have either full access or read-only access.

Full access allows students to search and manage (add, edit and delete), import and export records as well as create bibliographies.  Students with full access use the RefWorks link that is made in the course, or the predetermined login name and password if accessing the database outside of Blackboard.

Read-only access allows students to search, view and print references, but not add, edit or delete records.  To establish read-only access, the instructor must create a read-only password in the Update User Info area of RefWorks.  Students will have direct access to the database through the RefWorks link that is made in the course, or log in with the login name and this read-only password if using the database outside of Blackboard.

3.  To link a RefWorks account to a Blackboard course content area:

  • Navigate to the specific course's Control Panel
  • Select the content area you would like the RefWorks account linked from.
  • Select " Link to RefWorks database " from the drop-down box on the upper right portion of the screen and press the Go button.

4.  On the Link RefWorks Database page:

  • Enter RefWorks account information for the account you wish to link.
  • Enter a Title and Link text for display in the course's content area.

Q: When I click the RefWorks link I get a blank screen in Netscape. What's wrong?

When I click the RefWorks link I get a run-time error in Internet Explorer. What's wrong?

A: Most likely, you have popup blocking turned.

If the problem is in Netscape, go to Edit in the Netscape menu, select Preferences > Privacy & Security > Popup Windows. Either uncheck the radio button next to "Block unrequested popup windows and click OK, or click Allowed Sites, type "blackboard.princeton.edu" in the text box and click Add, then OK.

In IE 6.0, if you have popup blocking, it is a program that was added. There is probably a tool bar with a button you click to allow popups.

Q: How do I get help with RefWorks?

A: See http://www.pppl.gov/library/RefWorksweb/RefWorks.htm and http://www.refworks.com/Refworks/help/helpmainframe.asp
