Ali Campion - Bridge Year Ghana

My name is Ali and I live in Westwood, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, with my parents, two brothers, and sister. I recently graduated Westwood High School, where I played soccer, ran winter and spring track, and played clarinet and saxophone in the jazz band. My other interests include playing piano, hiking, biking, board games, reading, and spending time with my family. I have spent the past summer working at Hale Reservation Day Camp as a counselor for seven-year-old kids. I was inspired to participate in Bridge Year because of my experiences in community service through my parish and youth group. I also love to travel - to taste new foods, meet new people, see new places. I have traveled abroad with my family before, but I could not be more excited to shed the label of "tourist" and immerse myself wholeheartedly into Ghanaian culture for the coming year!

We wind our way through the dark and crowded 37 trotro station. Brandon leads the way, sidestepping the open sewer and dodging a trotro that has suddenly decided to go into reverse. Neeta stops briefly to buy a roasted plantain (her favorite) from one of the many vendors that crowd the station. Christina ignores a persistent taxi driver who yells "sweet lady, come!" as she passes by. I nearly trip over a chicken as I look over my shoulder to see Yoni briefly pulled by a few overly-friendly guys...

The hardest part to experience here in Ghana is the poverty. Growing up in a quiet suburb of Boston, I've never witnessed poverty on such a personal level. I work at an NGO called Street Girls' Aid, a daycare facility for kids ages 2-6 whose parents work on the streets. We offer a safe place for the kids to go during the day where we also teach classes to prepare them for school. My commute to work takes me through a pretty rough part of town.
