Peru Volunteer 2013-14
I’m from Darien, Connecticut, a small town on the coast of the Long Island Sound, and about an hour away from New York City. I graduated from Darien High School, where I kept active as a three-season athlete, a member of the cross country, basketball, and softball teams. When I wasn’t sweating buckets at a practice or a game, I cherished the time I spent volunteering with Darien Book Aid and working with a club called Embrace. At Book Aid, I organized shipments of books to schools and libraries all over the world. The letters that the organization received in response, from teachers and Peace Corps members, helped to cement my understanding of education’s positive impact and global importance. Similarly, Embrace- a club founded to encourage positive-self esteem and body image- opened my eyes to the significance of women’s issues. In Peru, I am particularly looking forward to working on the after school program and with the Women’s Groups; to me, these initiatives are both a unique opportunity and a natural extension of the topics I am passionate about. I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of the Bridge Year Program, and I cannot wait to begin exploring and learning in a country that I have dreamed about visiting for my entire life!
