Brazil Volunteer 2013-14
I’m Becca Kahn from Cincinnati, Ohio! In high school, I loved working on the school literary magazine, drawing and painting, playing tennis, and especially participating in Model United Nations, which reinforced my fascination with intercultural, international, integrative experiences. I’m passionate about volunteering, whether it be painting murals in Guatemala or tutoring children locally. I am a fan of Disney movies, ice cream, road-trips, Latin America, libraries, kittens, and chai tea. (Thing I am not a fan of: clowns.) What led me to apply for Bridge Year was a deep commitment to social justice, an interest in global affairs, and a passion for colorful cultural cuisine. Although I’m excited to see what I can do to make the world a better place, I know it’s more likely the world will make me a better human: in this coming year, I hope to learn how to better live in the moment: how to “viva o momento”. I hope to challenge myself and the comfort predictability lends me, challenge my ideas and values, and gain experiences that will enrich my education. I can’t wait to discover Brazil’s unique pulse, learn Portuguese, meet my host family, and spend time teaching children.
