China Volunteer 2013-14
I grew up on Reunion Island, a small French tropical island lost in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. Its geographical position and history makes it the home of Indian, East African, Chinese, Pakistani and Malagasy cultures even if the French were the first permanent inhabitants. This cultural melting pot certainly influenced my interest for the history and customs of civilizations around the world, but, more directly, lead me to learn Mandarin as well as the mandatory English in middle school. I then moved back to France for ninth grade and again to San Francisco a year later where I attended the La Perouse French high school. During my spare time, I enjoy playing any kind of sports with friends or my brother. I also play the violin, read fiction books or science magazines and spend time talking with my family around pita chips and hummus. In school I was part of a group whose goal was to raise funds to build schools in Haiti. I am excited to leave for Yunnan and see its landscapes, learn from its culture and help my fellow citizens of the world.
