Jackson Salter - Bridge Year Senegal

I was born in Connecticut, though I’ve spent most of my life in California and New Jersey. I am happiest when trying new foods, playing musical instruments, swimming, climbing trees, exploring, learning new languages, and helping others. Some of my other interests include hiking, photography, and word games. I recently graduated from James Caldwell High School, where I enjoyed swimming butterfly for the swim team and playing clarinet in the band and the orchestra. For the past four years, I was a tutor and mentor for underserved elementary school students. I was also a coach at a program designed to help high school students find their passions. Spending nine months in Senegal will be unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Soon, I will be surrounded by the colors, noises, and flavors of Africa. I look forward to living in an entirely different culture, engaging in service projects, learning Wolof and French, and exploring Senegal’s vibrant music scene. With 285 malaria pills and nine sunscreen tubes in hand, I’m ready for an adventure that will enrich my Princeton experience.
