John Van Orden
Peru Volunteer 2013-14
Greetings from the Garden State! I have lived nearly my entire life in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey. It is a small town in southern New Jersey, sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Pine Barrens to the west. As an outdoorsman, I love being able to spend time in both the ocean and the deep pine forests. Because I live so close to the shore, I always have the sea breezes blowing through my thoughts. When I’m not outside, you can usually find me surrounded by music. I’ve played piano for many years, and I work as an organist as well as a teacher at a local music studio. I have always loved to travel, but have never had an opportunity as exciting and challenging as this one. It is a dream to not just see, but live in the spectacular Andes Mountains. Peru is such a diverse country, and I am eager to experience its culture and even learn a little Quechua! I am sure this experience will open new doors and provide a fresh perspective upon returning to Princeton next year.
