China Volunteer 2013-14
I was born in Colombia, but raised in the US for most of my life. I attended the uber diverse McNair Academic High School in Jersey City, NJ and I couldn’t have asked for a better place to be exposed to different cultures. It was really this school that sparked an interest in me for other cultures and especially other languages (having only heard Spanish and English prior to my arrival here). I was deeply involved in French Club, WFP Club, Band and Swimming. Outside of school, I am a volunteer for the Maria Luisa de Moreno International Foundation, which has very similar goals (and methods to achieve them) as the Bridge Year Program. My biggest hobby is, without a doubt, trying to learn languages. I’ve tinkered in everything from Portuguese to Mandarin and from Esperanto to Malay (have you heard it before? If not, I definitely say try it!). Senior year, I shifted my focus towards Mandarin and I am super excited to have been given the opportunity to travel to China and contribute what I can, while being immersed in its culture.
