Important Information on Spring Advisement & Course Selection for Seniors
November 7, 2011
Dear Butler Seniors,
Welcome back from fall break!
Although you have just completed mid-term examinations, it is time to give some serious thought to what you need to accomplish by the end of the year. You will certainly be spending a lot of time on your thesis, but you also need to complete all of your course work, including all distribution and departmental requirements, in order to graduate. Please check your degree progress report before you sign up for classes for the spring and make sure you have everything covered. If you have any questions about your requirements or have not yet found a thesis adviser and/or topic, please let me know right away.
Remember that all A.B. seniors must complete six courses during senior year and at least two courses each semester. B.S.E. seniors must take four courses each semester, which includes the senior thesis or independent work and at least three taught courses per term. Your departmental representative will review your courses with you when he or she signs your Course Enrollment Worksheet. The schedule for spring-term course selection is as follows:
(Note: Spring Course Offerings is now available on the Office of the Registrar’s website. It is updated daily.)
Fall mid-term grades can be seen on SCORE beginning November 7. Mid-term grades are only reported for 100 and 200-level courses. You may elect to take a class P/D/F on SCORE between November 7 and 28. No grade option changes are permitted after November 28.
Between November 14 and November 23, you should meet with your departmental representative or designated academic adviser. Contact your departmental office for information on how to sign up for an appointment.
Only your departmental representative/academic adviser can approve your course schedule, so be certain not to miss your appointment. If for any reason you cannot make the appointment, notify your departmental representative/adviser well in advance and reschedule the meeting. Print out TWO copies of the Course Enrollment Worksheet for your departmental representative/adviser’s signature. Be sure to include the 5-digit Class Number for each course (you can find the class number in the Course Offerings next to the time schedule for each course).
Leave one signed copy of the worksheet with your departmental representative/adviser and keep the other copy for web enrollment. The senior deadline for turning in course enrollment worksheets to the department is November 23. You must secure your departmental representative/adviser’s signature on both copies of the worksheet in order to be eligible for web enrollment.
The senior web appointment period for course enrollment begins at 7:30 a.m. on November 28 and ends at 5:00 p.m. on December 13. Observe these dates carefully, as there is a $10.00 per day late penalty for selecting courses after the December 13 deadline.
Between January 23 and January 27, during the second week of final exams, the SCORE website will reopen to allow spring term course changes. SCORE closes for all undergraduates on January 27.
Starting on February 6 SCORE reopens for the free course change period. Undergraduates may change a course without a charge until February 17. Every change made after that date is charged at $45 per course, and seniors may make no further change without the appropriate dean’s approval.
After February 17, seniors are not permitted to make changes to their schedule through SCORE. After that date, any change you make in your course schedule must be approved by your dean. If you want to drop a departmental course you will also need your departmental representative’s signature. You should present your departmental adviser when appropriate, and then to me, with a completed Course Enrollment Worksheet, listing the course or courses you wish to drop. Leave one signed copy of the form with your departmental representative/adviser, and take the other to your residential college office. If the change is approved, the college will contact the Registrar to process the change for you.
I hope that you had a good break and that the rest of the term goes well. Please let me know if you have any questions about your graduation requirements, and don’t hesitate to contact me for an appointment at the number listed below. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you if you have any questions or issues you would like to discuss.
All best,
