“The best resource Princeton has is the people who live, work, and study here; we have no intention of imposing a new structure invented by “the administration.” “The system” is not broken; but life here could be even better, for students both male and female, if some relatively simple steps are taken.”
--Nannerl O. Keohane,
Report of the Steering Committee for Undergraduate Women’s Leadership, p 19
From 2009-2011, Princeton initiated three University-wide studies to examine key ways to enhance the undergraduate experience. These studies were conducted by faculty, administrators and students from all parts of campus in three working groups:
- The Steering Committee on Undergraduate Women's Leadership (SCUWL)
- The Working Group on Campus Social and Residential Life

The studies yielded some 90+ unique recommendations around five key themes:
Beginnings: The first few weeks on campus present students with important choices to make.
Community: A sense of a University-wide identity through shared experiences is critical to campus life.
Connections: Students want to create stronger bonds within their class and between the classes.
Mentoring: There is a need for more mentoring for all students on campus, and especially for women.
Balance: Princeton students face the challenge of having to balance many competing interests.
In reviewing the recommendations, two significant questions emerged:
- How do we take these recommendations and move them forward?
- And how do we involve all of the relevant primary stakeholders?
To address these questions, four implementation teams, each led by a student and an administrator or faculty member were formed. Together with their team members, they were asked to identify, pilot and then embed within the institution, the highest impact programs that would fulfill the select recommendations to make life here “even better, for students both male and female” during their time at Princeton.
