Fall 2009 Early Arrival Summary and Process

Summary
The early arrival process was instituted in the Fall of 2009 and showed some early signs of success:

  • Used only 7 of 50 dorms for assigned housing
  • Reviewed 110 group requests for early arrival; approved all, renegotiated arrival dates
  • Reviewed 94 individual requests for early arrival; approved 15
  • Safety and security improved; no alcohol transports until 9/11
  • Fewer lock outs
  • Approximate savings across several units:
    • $100,000.00 Operational budget savings
    • $190,000.00 Design and Construction savings
    • $290,000.00 
  • Early arrival database and debrief information to improve process
  • Beginning to shift early arrival expectations
  • Strong support from campus partners

Following a full debrief from all the campus partners, the Early Arrival Policy Committee will begin planning for Fall 2010.
 
Process

The University is committed to upholding existing early arrival and early housing policies in a consistent manner. Dormitories officially open on Saturday, September 12, 2009; the first day of classes is Thursday, September 17. Only those students who meet the criteria described below will be considered eligible for early arrival.

Undergraduates who are participating in an official University pre-orientation or orientation program will have early housing contingent upon approval of the activity and return date. The department /office sponsors of the pre-orientation and orientation programs will request pre-approval and notify all participants.

Individual students who are not part of a group and supporting an official University pre-orientation or orientation program, must request approval for early arrival through an on-line application process.

Undergraduates who are not participating in an official University pre-orientation or orientation program and been pre-approved for early return, may return to campus during specified hours, beginning Saturday, September 12.

Note:

  • Students approved for early arrival will receive an e-mail confirming the approved arrival date. Students should plan to arrive on campus during regular business hours or during specified hours.
  • Students who return to campus prior to the approved early arrival date or September 12 must make arrangements to stay off-campus at their own expense. On-campus housing will not be available. Local hotels.

Sept.   1 - 4 Optional International pre-orientation program
Sept.   6 -11 Outdoor Action, Community Action pre-orientation programs
Sept. 12 Freshmen orientation begins
Sept. 12 -16 Move-in for sophomores, juniors and seniors not in pre-approved groups
Sept. 13 Opening Exercises and the Pre-rade
Sept. 14 Residential College dining begins for sophomores, juniors and seniors
Sept. 17 Classes begin

Note: Freshmen orientation begins Saturday, September 12. The receptions and meals in the residential colleges that weekend are available only to freshmen and their families. Sophomore, junior and senior dining in the residential colleges begins Monday, September 14.
