Interning Abroad
Consider the following steps when choosing to pursue an internship abroad:
1. Start early. It generally takes longer to secure an experience abroad due to visa issues. You can also expect to spend time vetting organizations that are not familiar to you.
2. Think strategically. Determine what are the most important reasons for you to work/volunteer abroad, and how you hope to accomplish those goals. This will help you narrow down your options.
3. Lean on experts. Involve those who are familiar with the region to suggest additional resources and leads, such as Princeton alumni and their regional associations. Uncover country-specific information using Going Global or idealist.org or one of our regional links.
4. Consider a Princeton-affiliated program. These Princeton-specific opportunities are well established and assist with navigating the logistics of working abroad.
5. Consider an internship Exchange or work permit program. These programs arrange paid and unpaid internships and facilitate the process of obtaining work authorization in a select number of countries. There are often placement fees which can vary widely. Examples of these include AIESEC and BUNAC.
6. Consider a volunteer program. These programs arrange volunteer experiences in a range of areas such as education, health, community development, and environment. Some of these programs have placement fees, while others serve as a clearinghouse for opportunities. Examples of programs can be found here.
7. Consider setting up your own internship directly with an organization. You can also obtain an internship directly with government agencies, non-governmental organizations and international corporations. Inquire directly or ask the States-side recruiters of international corporations for contact information in your country of interest.
8. Review information for Princeton students preparing to intern abroad. The Office of International Programs provides important information regarding pre-departure preparation. All students who work abroad must register their experience on the University Travel Database.
