Welcome to GSS 2023!
This year's annual Graduate Student Symposium will be held on Friday, October 6th, 2023. Please register for the event and return to this website for updates about keynote speakers, scheduling, and location.
The annual Graduate Student Symposium (GSS) is organized by the graduate students in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Princeton University. GSS showcases current graduate student research in the department, ranging from mathematical modeling and simulations to materials science, bioengineering, and beyond. Fourth year graduate students will give oral presentations of their research and third year students will present posters.
GSS is a proud department tradition! We believe that creating a space for student presentations brings specialists from different fields together. Moreover, this event fosters an avenue for discussion between current Princeton students and faculty, and cultivates relationships within academia and industry. Ultimately, the environment created annually by GSS provides an excellent opportunity for collaboration and networking.
This year, we are happy to invite industry representatives to attend our exciting research presentations and poster session. We hope this will lead to fruitful discussion and relationships between our students and industries!
Join us in welcoming Dr. Chastity Bradford, department chair of the Biology College of Arts and Sciences at Tuskegee University, and Dr. Avery Ince, Vice President in Medical Affairs at Janssen North America, to campus as our two keynote speakers for GSS 2023!

Avery Ince MD PhD is a Vice President in Medical Affairs at Janssen North America. Prior to this, he served as the US Scientific & Medical Affairs Strategy Head at Janssen NA and, before that, was the Vice President of Medical Affairs at Janssen China. Avery got his start in industry with Merck where he designed Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials in Rahway, NJ before leaving the US to lead large medical teams in Asia-Pacific.
Before joining industry, Avery completed Internal Medicine residency and Endocrine fellowship training at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and held a faculty position with clinical, teaching and research responsibilities at Harvard Medical School. Avery earned his M.D. as well as a Ph.D. in Cell Biology, both at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Brown University.
