Simulated Surfactant Micelles on the Cover of Langmuir

The cover of the March 24 issue of the American Chemical Society’s journal Langmuir features a rendition of a simulation snapshot of a 17 mM solution of individual cationic surfactants in equilibrium with micellar aggregates of different sizes.  This striking cover image heralds a Feature Article within the issue, authored by former Princeton CBE Postdoctoral Associate Arben Jusufi (now at ExxonMobil Research & Engineering) and Athanassios Panagiotopoulos, Susan Dod Brown Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering, on “Explicit- and Implicit-Solvent Simulations of Micellization in Surfactant Solutions”.   Computation of key micellization properties of surfactants, in particular the critical micelle concentration and equilibrium aggregate distributions, down to low surfactant concentrations are a computational challenge, and point to the need for the development of improved models.  The Feature Article is open access, hence available to anyone, even without a subscription to the journal.
