David P. Billington, whose scholarship found elegance and beauty in practical works of engineering, died in Los Angeles on March 25. He was 90.
The department is pleased to announce that Professor Peter Jaffe and his research team has discovered a bacterium, Acidimicrobiaceae bacterium A6, that can break down ammonium, part of both fertilizer and sewage runoff, without oxygen. Dr. Dorotea Sigurdardottir, former member of SHMlab was voted 2017 Concrete Designer of the Year by the online Swedish magazine “Concrete” (more details at http://betong.se/2017/11/24/nu-har-arets-roger-delats-ut/). In addition, Dorotea recently became R&D Manager of Ramböll, Sweden.

Jack Reilly, a member of SHMlab, has been awarded the Best Paper Award – Second Place at the ASCE’s Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) annual conference, held from May 29-June 1, 2018, at MIT. The competition was organized by EMI’s Structural Health Monitoring & Control Committee.

Sewage treatment may be an unglamorous job, but bacteria are happy to do it. Sewage plants rely on bacteria to remove environmental toxins from waste so that the processed water can be safely discharged into oceans and rivers.

The department is pleased to announce that Professor Sigrid Adriaenssens won the ASCE George Winter Award.  The award recognizes the value of the integration of engineering and art in her work.  According to the award letter, she was selected by the Structural Engineering Institute "for your designs of large scale sculptures, which imbue in their makers and users an intuitive understanding between force and form, and serve as focus points for local communities."
