Combustion Summer School
** On-Line Application Closed 03.16.2012
Our Mission
To provide the next generation of combustion researchers with a comprehensive knowledge in the technical areas of combustion theory, experiment, computation, fundamentals, and applications.
Academic Program
The 2012 session, scheduled for June 24 to June 29, 2012, will offer four courses:
Participants will select one course from the following three courses:
- Combustion Theory, to be delivered by Professor Heinz G. Pitsch of the RWTH Aachen University;
- Combustion Chemistry, to be delivered by Professor Hai Wang of the University of Southern California;
- Internal Combustion Engines, to be jointly delivered by Professor Timothy C. Lieuwen, of the Georgia Institute of Technology, who will deliver Part I - Gas Turbines, and Professor Rolf D. Reitz, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who will deliver Part II - Reciprocating Engines.
In addition, ALL participants will be enrolled in Frontiers in Combustion, a 5-day lecture series covering:
- Combustion in a Global Environment Context, to be delivered by Professor Robert H. Socolow of Princeton University;
- New Developments in Combustion Technology, to be delivered by Dr. George A. Richards, of NETL, DOE;
- Alternative Fuels Including Biofuels, to be delivered by Professor William H. Green, of MIT
- Cyber-Combustion, to be delivered by Dr. Jacqueline H. Chen, of Sandia National Laboratories
- Nanoengineered Reactive Materials and their Combustion and Synthesis, to be delivered by Professor Richard A. Yetter, of the Pennsylvania State University.
The Combustion Theory, Combustion Chemistry, and Internal Combustion Engines courses will be held in parallel.
First Time Participants to the Combustion Summer School will select one of the two foundational courses: (1) Combustion Theory or (2) Combustion Chemistry. They may not enroll in Internal Combustion Engines without special permission.
Returning Participants (i.e., those participants who attended either the 2010 and/or 2011 Session) will select one of the three courses: (1) Combustion Theory or (2) Combustion Chemistry or (3) Internal Combustion Engines (Part I and II).
In addition, ALL PARTICIPANTS will be enrolled in the Frontiers in Combustion Lecture Series.
Please note that the instructors for the two foundational courses for the 2011 session are different from those of the 2010 and 2011 sessions so that the returning participants can be exposed to different perspectives of the subjects.
