In a groundbreaking achievement that could help scientists "build" new biological systems, Princeton University scientists have constructed for the first time artificial proteins that enable the growth of living cells. The team of researchers created genetic sequences never before seen in nature, and the scientists showed that they can produce substances that sustain life in cells almost as readily as proteins produced by nature's own toolkit. "What we have here are mo
There is a fresh buzz of excitement surrounding the new Frick Chemistry Laboratory, and it isn't just the building's striking facade that has people talking. With the first full schedule of classes set to begin later this month and the laboratories ready to host their first full complement of students and researchers, the initial expressions of awe and amazement over the design of the building have been joined by new words -- opportunity, energy, innovation and growth. David MacMillan, the A. Barton Hepburn Professor of Organic Chemistry, has been named the winner of the 2011 Mitsui Chemicals Catalysis Award. The award was established in 2004 with the aim of recognizing researchers who have made outstanding achievements in catalysis science. MacMillan, who also is chair of the Department of Chemistry, was cited for developing the concept of organocatalysis and for playing a central role in his field. An award ceremony will be held in March in Kisarazu City, Ja
