Cooperative Institute for Modeling the Earth System

The Cooperative Institute for Modeling the Earth System (CIMES) is a collaboration between Princeton University and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) to carry out research in earth system sciences.

Our Vision

Be a world leader in understanding and predicting the earth system, across time scales from days to decades, and from the local to global spatial scales, with particular focus on extreme events, and integrating physical, chemical, and biological components.

Our Mission

Focus the scientific talent of Princeton University at all levels from graduate students, through postdocs, and faculty, to address key questions related to climate science and earth system modeling, providing a bridge between NOAA-GFDL and Princeton University and the wider academic community.

Statement on Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity

CIMES believes that equity, diversity and inclusion are intrinsically valuable, and an essential element of ethical research and educational practices. We also understand that they magnify the educational and research potential of us as individuals, our institute, the University, and our global scientific disciplines. We seek and appreciate contributions from all members of our community, without regard to race, ethnicity, culture, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, physical ability, age, socioeconomic status or nationality. We desire and celebrate diversity, and we know that a more diverse and inclusive community is stronger, more resilient, and better able to  produce fundamental scientific advances and to effectively communicate to the global community.
