Profile
After graduating from Brown University with a major in Greek and Latin, I pursued an MPhil in Greek History at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. I then spent some years teaching middle- and high-school Greek and Latin in New York City, including a wonderful stint at Collegiate School, before deciding to continue my studies of Greek history, first at Harvard University and, since 2008, at Princeton.
I am writing my doctoral dissertation on local historiography in Classical and Hellenistic Greece. My aim is first to investigate the link between a community’s self-identity and its autobiographical impulse and then to understand how the histories of individual Greek localities (poleis, islands, and mainland regions) vary in shape and content. I want in addition to explore the persistence of the phenomenon through the ages and to relate the fragments of Greek local histories to extant (and non-Greek) examples of the form.
This dissertation builds upon an enduring preoccupation with Greek local history; I published a paper last year on the Spartan manifestation of local history and wrote my MPhil thesis years ago on the Atthidographic treatment of early Athenian history. But I am interested in many aspects of Greek history and Greek and Roman historiography.
