Ph.D., Cambridge, 1982. Joined the faculty in 2002. His interests include philosophy of mind and language, African and African-American intellectual history, and political philosophy. Among his books are Assertion and Conditionals (1985), For Truth in Semantics (1986), In My Father's House: Africa in the Philosophy of Culture (1992), Color Conscious: The Political Morality of Race (with Amy Gutmann; 1996), Thinking It Through: An Introduction to Contemporary Philosophy (2003), The Ethics of Identity (2004), and Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers (2005). In January 2008 Harvard University Press will publish his Experiments in Ethics.
