"The Baby in the Bulrushes: Moses in the American Imagination."
Drawing on a wide range of materials, from children's books and comics to needlepoint samplers, advertisements and action figures, this presentation explores the ways in which the biblical figure of Moses loomed large within the circumference of the American child of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The stuff of heroism and derring-do as well as an expression of maternal solicitude, Moses's life was translated into a characteristically American idiom, linking the modern world to that of the ancient Near East.
