Gilens on The Daily Show; Research Featured in Media Internationally
Martin Gilens, Professor of Politics and member of the executive committee of the Center for the Study of Democratic Politics, has been interviewed about his recent work in U.S. and international media outlets. Professor Gilens and his co-author, Benjamin Page (Northwestern) have discussed their findings about the influence of big money -- wealthy individuals and corporations -- on our politicians and policymakers.
“This study dashes hopes for this democratic kind of interest-group influence,’ said Gilens. "We found that corporations and business-oriented interest groups, which often seek policies that the public opposes, have much more impact on policy making than mass-based groups. Moreover, even mass-based groups (taken together) do not actually line up very well with the policies that ordinary citizens want.”
Jon Stewart interviewed Gilens and Page on The Daily Show, and a wide range of other media outlets have featured their work recently, including print and online publications other television, and radio (including Quartz, Al Jazeera, Talking Points Memo, VICE magazine in the UK, and most recently Israel's leading economics newspaper), .
