"The Lotus Sūtra and Saint Nichiren in Kabuki" by Kanji Tamura
A BSW Lecture by Kanji Tamura, Rissho University
Kabuki theater, one of the representative art forms of Japan, flourished in early modern Japan. Many Kabuki plays drew extensively on Buddhist subjects. My talk will focus on Kabuki plays that incorporate elements taken from the Lotus Sūtra and the Nichiren school of Buddhism. These plays show how the dramatic, energetic, and redemptive nature of Lotus devotion found expression in popular performance and also suggest how Buddhist ideas were received by both playwrights and theater-goers.
