Elizabeth Strom's research concerns the intersection of
economic development and cultural policy in American cities. As
Director of Case Study Research for the Center's "Reinventing
Downtown" project, she is conducting research on central
city redevelopment projects in six US cities. In addition, she
is currently pursuing a study of culturally-based urban development
efforts in Philadelphia, Newark, Seattle and Charlotte. She has
published two papers based on this research, "Let's Put on
a Show! Performing Arts and Urban Revitalization in Newark,"
in the Journal of Urban Affairs, and "Converting Pork into
Porcelain: Cultural Institutions and Downtown Development,"
forthcoming in the Urban Affairs Review. Both papers
analyze the confluence of interests that brings public officials,
arts entrepreneurs and arts patrons together in support of new
cultural facilities. Strom, who received her Ph.D in political
science from CUNY, is interested more broadly in urban politics,
American government and public policy. She is the author of "Building
the New Berlin: The Politics of Urban Development in Germany's
Capital City," published by Lexington Books in 2001. She
is currently Associate Professor of Political Science at Rutgers
University-Newark.
