DeSC Standard Vista Computers Migration to Windows 7 and MS Office 2010 Project

The DeSC Program will stop supporting Microsoft Vista computers in the DeSC Standard environment starting next year on June 1, 2014. To prepare for Princeton Prime, scheduled for go live in the summer of 2014, the DeSC Standard environment’s migration of Vista machines to Windows 7 and Microsoft 2010 will commence this month. FY13 and Dell OptiPlex 9020 Release Information

Dell anticipates Intel to release its new chipset with the vPro and Enterprise support sometime this Fall. Dell is scheduled to announce the OptiPlex 9020 with this support as soon as possible after Intel’s release.   The mew OptiPlex and Latitude models for DeSC Standard will not be available in time for departments to purchase with FY13 funds.   OIT recommends to departments, who want to  use their FY13 funds, to purchase the OptiPlex 9010 and the Latitude E6430 models  so the order invoices by the Office of Finance and Treasury ’s cutoff date of June 14, 2013.  Dell states that the Latitude models' turnaround time is 10 business days and  3-5 business day lead time for the OptiPlex models. Even with those timeframes in mind, please order as early as possible.

FY14 Hardware Budget Recommendations

Princeton Prime, which includes a major upgrade to PeopleSoft Financials, is scheduled to go live in the summer of 2014.      This version of PeopleSoft does not support Microsoft Vista.   We recommend that departments include any DeSC model replacements in their FY14 budget requests for PeopleSoft users on DeSC Standard Vista computer models scheduled to fall below the DeSC Hardware minimum before June 1, 2014.

DeSC Standard OptiPlex Desktop Hardware Migration

All DeSC Standard OptiPlex 780s running   Vista will need to be reimaged to Windows 7 to remain in DeSC after June 1, 2014.   The Vista models that will need to be replaced with the 9010 or 9020 (once it is announced) include:

  • Dell OptiPlex 755s
  • Dell OptiPlex 960s.  

All DeSC Standard OptiPlex 990s are currently running Windows 7 and Office 2010 and are outside the scope of this project.

DeSC Standard Latitude Laptops Hardware Migration

Last fall Dell moved their Latitude laptop models’ release cycle from a Spring/Summer timeframe to Fall. Dell is currently scheduled to announce the new Latitude models in October 2013.

 All Latitude E6400s will need to be replaced by April 2014 to remain in DeSC Standard.   The Latitude E6410s and E4310s running Vista will need to be reimaged with the DeSC Windows 7 image or replaced before   June 1, 2014 to remain in DeSC Standard. The E6410 and E4310 running Windows 7 and Office 2010 are outside the scope of this migration project and may remain in DeSC Standard until the warranty expires.
