Princeton University’s informal motto is “in the nation’s service and in the service of all nations,” and its commitment to social engagement begins with our neighbors. Outreach to the communities of Princeton and nearby Trenton includes educational programs for low-income students and local teachers; donations of food, clothing and furniture; and access to lectures, continuing education, arts performances and cultural festivals. Throughout the year, Princeton employees actively participate in many projects that help to build communities close to campus and beyond.
Along with sponsoring ongoing projects, the University has the flexibility and resources to act quickly when it sees a critical need. Immediately after Hurricane Katrina, Princeton partnered with Brown University to help Dillard University in New Orleans resume operations, with departments across campus contributing to the effort. In addition, the Office of Human Resources instituted the Humanitarian Relief policy allowing employees to take two weeks of paid leave to provide humanitarian assistance on the Gulf Coast, effective through June 2009—while also supporting hundreds of students and staff who have taken trips to assist with the cleanup. With so many willing participants, Princeton is able to extend its assets to great lengths.
