Daniel Burton-Rose completed his M.A. in Asian Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 2009. His thesis, “Integrating Inner Alchemy into Late Ming Cultural History,” is a contextualization and annotation of Xingming guizhi (1615), an illustrated compendium instructing the cultivator in the means by which to “become a transcendent, become a buddha.” In his doctoral work he plans to move from the code cracking stage of reading Inner Alchemical texts to mapping the cultivator networks in Ming Jiangnan, using scripture prefaces, gazetteers, iconography, and literary sources.
