Professor Ge is the founding director of the National Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Fudan University in Shanghai. A specialist in medieval Chinese religion and history, he is a leading scholar of the intellectual and institutional history of Chan (i.e., Zen) Buddhism in China. He is known to scholars of history, literature, and religion.
Ge will interact with Professor Benjamin Elman in East Asian Studies, and serve as a resource to faculty and students throughout the East Asian Studies community. He will participate in The Third Annual Joint Fudan-Princeton-Tokyo University International Conference on Contested World Histories: Global History in the Eyes of China, Japan, and the U.S. on Dec. 16-19, 2013.
He will visit the East Asian Languages and Cultures Dept. at Harvard University in spring 2014.
