Abstract:
The socioeconomics challenges of recent years have put “cost effective healthcare” on the forefront of issues facing our generation. Toward this ultimate goal, it is critical to have a better understanding of diseases, their earlier diagnosis and improved treatment. Medical imaging technologies – often referred to as modalities – are clinical imaging systems that are used to create images of the human body, and/or its functions non-invasively for routine medical screening, diagnostics, and management of treatment.
This lecture will start with a brief introduction of digital image quality as it relates to medical imaging, and then describes various types of medical imaging technologies including Digital Radiography, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nuclear Medicine Imaging, Ultrasound Imaging, as well as upcoming technologies such as Optical Imaging, Optoacoustic Imaging. For each technology, the basic imaging physics and tissue interaction as well as image quality and clinical applications will be presented. We will also review image analysis and visualization, as well as safety and regulatory requirements. Finally we will briefly overview the challenges of introducing new medical imaging technologies in to the healthcare practice which is an essential part of this innovation continuum.
