Gmachl Named Eugene Higgins Professor of Electrical Engineering
Claire Gmachl, professor of electrical engineering, has been named Eugene Higgins Professor in Engineering. Gmachl conducts research on the development of new quantum devices, especially Quantum Cascade lasers, and their optimization for sensor systems and their applications for the environment and health. Gmachl is also the director of MIRTHE, the NSF Engineering Research Center on Mid-InfraRed Technologies for Health and the Environment. Gmachl earned her Ph.D. from the Technical University of Vienna, Austria, and has been a faculty member of the Department for 8 years. Prior to joining Princeton, Gmachl was a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies. The Eugene Higgins professorship was established in 1949.
