Prof. Barry Rand will join the EE Department as an Assistant Professor starting July 1. Prof. Rand obtained his PhD from Princeton University. His research is concerned with understanding and leveraging the electronic and optical properties of thin film materials, and in particular semiconductors.

Prof. Claire Gmachl has received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the School of Engineering and Applied Science for her contributions in creating several new courses including an introductory optics class and the engineering school's graduate-level ethics research course. Prof. Andrew Houck has been awarded the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching. This is Princeton’s highest recognition for excellence in teaching. Prof. Houck has been credited for generating interest in electrical engineering courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Prof. Sharad Malik is the recipient of the following awards at the 50th Anniversary of the IEEE/ACM Design Automation Conference, the premier conference in Electronic Design Automation.
Prof. Naveen Verma has been selected for the 2013 Intel Early Career Faculty Honor Program (ECFHP) Award. This Award was created to help Intel connect with the brightest early career faculty members at the top universities around the world. The Award includes a cash gift that is used by the awardee to support their academic research and to allow them to travel to Intel in order to network and collaborate with Intel researchers. The award ceremony will take place on June 25-26 in San Francisco.
Prof. Naveen Verma has received the National Science Foundation (NSF) Career Award for his research proposal entitled "Hardware and Algorithmic Architectures for Analyzing Physically-complex Systems: embedding inference capabilities in ultra-low-power sensors". The aim of this work is to study how small electronic devices can function at a high level in the face of severe physical complexities. This is approached by exploring how algorithmic methods emerging from the domain of machine learning can be incorporated into small-scale devices to enable analysis of data that is otherwise too complex to model and understand. Prof. Verma joined the Electrical Engineering Department in 2009 as an Assistant Professor.
Prof. Kaushik Sengupta's doctoral thesis at California Institute of Technology entitled "Silicon-based Terahertz Circuits and Systems" was selected for the 2013 Charles and Ellen Wiltz Prize. The Charles and Ellen Wilts Prize is awarded every year to one PhD Candidate for outstanding independent research in electrical engineering leading to a PhD degree.
The paper “Accelerating Boolean Satisfiability with Configurable Hardware,” authored in 1998 by Prof. Sharad Malik, Prof. Margaret Martonosi, Peixin Zhong*99, Qualcomm, and Pranav Ashar, Real Intent, was selected for inclusion in “Significant Contributions from 20 Years of the International IEEE Symposium on Field-Programmable Custom Computing Machines (1993-2013)”. Former dean and emeritus professor of electrical engineering, Hisashi Kobayashi received the 2012 C&C (Computer and Communications) Prize for his seminal role in advancing the storage of digital information. The C&C Prize is given annually to no more than two groups "in recognition of outstanding contributions to research and development and/or pioneering work in the fields of semiconductors, computers, telecommunications and their integrated technologies." Prof. Mung Chiang is the recipient of the Alan T. Waterman Award; the highest honor for young researchers given by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The award cites Chiang’s “fundamental contributions to the analysis, design and performance optimization of wireless networks.” The Waterman Award is granted annually to an outstanding young researcher in science or engineering fields and is supported by NSF.
