A new approach to quantum gain based on collective superradiance is presented. Efficient conversion of intense infrared to the XUV is shown to be within the realm of modern femtosecond laser technology. Simply stated: we have found a new mechanism for atomic excitation which is many orders of magnitude more efficient than the usual multiphoton excitation. In addition to detailed analytical analysis, confirmed by numerical simulation, we present a physically appealing explanation of the present effect in terms of coupled classical oscillators
