Periodically sheared suspensions of non-Brownian suspensions undergo a phase transition that is remarkably similar to second order phase transitions in equilibrium systems. The system exhibits several interesting behaviors including nematic ordering of fibers in the vorticity (rather than the flow) direction as well as a slowly varying order parameter that, when properly accounted for, leads to a remarkable scaling of the transient response of the system.
