Faculty awards
David Billington ’50, the Gordon Y.S. Wu Professor of Engineering and professor of civil and environmental engineering, received the 2008 Distinguished Award of Merit from the American Council of Engineering Companies. Garry Brown and Edgar Choueiri ’91, professors of mechanical and aerospace engineering, were elected as 2009 Fellows of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
Rene Carmona, the Paul Wythes ’55 Professor of Engineering and Finance and professor of operations research and financial engineering, and Robert Tarjan, the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Computer Science, were elected as fellows of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
Michael Celia *83, the Theodora Shelton Pitney Professor of Environmental Studies and chair of civil and environmental engineering, was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Stephen Chou, the Joseph C. Elgin Professor of Engineering and professor of electrical engineering, received the 2009 Outstanding Research Award from the Pan Wen Yuan Foundation.
Perry Cook and Jennifer Rexford ’91, both professors of computer science, were elected fellows of the Association for Computing Machinery. Cook was elected for his contributions to the field of computer music, sound synthesis and voice analysis and synthesis and Rexford for her work on network control and management systems.
Jianqing Fan, the Frederick L. Moore ’18 Professor of Finance and professor of operations research and financial engineering, received a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
Christodoulos Floudas, the Stephen C. Macaleer ’63 Professor in Engineering and Applied Science and professor of chemical engineering, delivered the 2008 Roger W.H. Sargent Lecture in Chemical Engineering at Imperial College, London.
Philip Holmes, the Eugene Higgins Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, received the 2009 Lyapunov Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineering.
Bede Liu, professor of electrical engineering, received the 2008 Signal Processing Society Education Award from the IEEE, a professional organization focused on the advancement of technology.
Lynn Loo *01, an associate professor of chemical engineering, received the Dreyfus Research Award in Environmental Chemistry from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation.
Ignacio Rodriguez-Iturbe, the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was selected to receive the 2009 Bowie Medal from the American Geophysical Union for “outstanding contributions to fundamental geophysics and for unselfish cooperation in research.” The Union’s highest honor, the Bowie Medal was established in 1939.
Rodriguez-Iturbe, the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, also was awarded the inaugural Edward O. Wilson Biodiversity Technology Pioneer Award by the American Computer Museum in Bozeman, Mont.
Robert Socolow, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, received the American Society of Mechanical Engineer’s Frank Kreith Energy Award for his pioneering contributions in energy research.
Howard Stone, the Donald R. Dixon ’69 and Elizabeth W. Dixon professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
